You don't know Jack (but you should!)

Jack Hill is a 98-year-old World War II Veteran. AAG was honored to photograph him for the November Issue of Neighbors of South Deland and Victoria Park magazine. I tried to capture some truly authentic portraits.

Photographing older people requires a variety of skills including communication, creativity and empathy. My advice is let them talk. As simple as it sounds, it helps me connect with my subjects. Sometimes people assume they should stand totally still in front of the camera and not blink or breathe. I let them know that isn’t the case by asking them questions and sharing my own stories! That makes our time together more of a fun meeting and less like a formal photo shoot.

Older people aren’t used to the poses and facial expressions that most teenagers have already mastered. I focus on letting folks like Jack just be themselves in my presence. That’s what I want to capture!

Jack shared with me a wooden photo album carved by one of his sons that has photos of his family life. When I find out what my subject cares about, I let them show it to my camera. That makes them feel special, which is something every client deserves to feel.

Jack and his wife were married for 70 years and her handmade quilts won awards at many state fairs. He displays them proudly, throughout his home. Older people have years of wisdom, a collection of stories and a unique way of looking at life. That combination of treasures is perfect for a photographer like me! Photographing the elderly is all about traditions, genuine emotions and precious family moments.
